This is a story of a boy shortly after the war. His mother is put in a desperate situation to save her young seven year old boy. The boy is sent off to Northern Italy to a family that is able to provide for him. Several months later he is sent back to live with his now very distant mother. He is faced with the decision to either stay in poverty or flee back to the family that helped him and beg them to stay. the second part of the book is a now adult reflecting back on his life.
I was happy and relived to finally read a story that was not all depressing for what happened back in the days of the trains that took children. this story was very heartbreaking in a good way- we get to see the story through two points of view- one through the eyes of a innocent child- then through the eyes of a grown adult. This books captures some immediate history post the war. I am sure youll love this book.
