I've always been fascinated by stories of the children who were sent away during the war or because their parents weren't able to give them the life they deserved. I've never read one about a child from Italy before that stayed in Italy and I found this one fascinating.
Amerigo is a child who is about 8 years old and his mother is a single parent. She's been doing her best to provide for him, but now that the offer has come for him to have a potentially better life she jumps at the chance. Now Amerigo and several of his friends from the neighborhood are off on an adventure to northern Italy to join new families and hopefully not be hungry anymore.
Amerigo's obsession with numbers and shoes is one that I think is going to help him along the more time goes on throughout this story and I'm very interested in seeing how he manages in his new household.
