WWII is one of my favorite subgenre of Historical Fiction and I don't believe enough authors focus on Italy during and especially not after the war. Amerigo is a young Italian boy who is sent off to a family to take care of him, while Naples is trying to be put back together now that the war is over. It's heartbreaking to think about a child having to be sent away from his mother to be better taken care of, but think about the trauma that the child must go through when they are being taken care of only to be sent back home later. While I'm sure Amerigo wants to be with his mother, how can he not want to have a full stomach and be warm? How can a child choose between his family and having his basic needs being covered. He is given the choice of returning home to his mother or becoming a member of his adoptive family. I for one defiantly want to see what Amerigo chooses and how he has to make this choice. Ardone is a powerful writer and I can't wait to see how this unfolds!
