The beginning of the book is very evocative of a poor child describing the difficulties of his daily existence after World War II, and his hopes of rescue. Having heard similar stories from my Austrian mother and her family about what it was like for them during and after the war, the first few chapters of this story bring back memories and make me want to read more.
