This is a beautiful and moving piece of historical fiction. I was drawn in immediately by the haunted cover and the first chapter. I can't imagine being in Mamma's shoes, having no choice but to send her young son away. It's heartbreaking to read about a child so poor and hungry that he has to work and think like an adult. The author's use of language and vivid descriptions elegantly capture the hardships this family endure. I look forward to reading this book in its entirety and following Ameri on his journey.
