My first impressions - It is keeping my interest, partly because I have a fascination with books about Italy. But also because it is being told from a little boy's point of view. This will be very difficult for the writer to accomplish and I am wondering how well she will carry it off. It is hard to imagine being 8; does the character sound authentic for an 8 year old? He does, so far. And so far the story is moving at a good pace, while still including enough description to make the setting and characters fully realized.

I began speculating as to whether the boy's father would show up later in the book. But mostly I was content to let the author carry me along with the story so far. Amerigo, the little boy is a likable narrator. So far, the book is well written, so much so that I am able to ignore the fact that it is written in the present tense. which I usually find very annoying. I am looking forward to the part of the book which will describe Northern Italy.
