I will admit that this book took me a little by surprise ... mostly because I didn't read anything about it before delving into it. The story itself, is a good one. Set in typical fantasy times (generally medieval), gets into the politics of warring families, something like warring mafia families in our day. For the main family, the father is the victim of an assassination attempt, leaving his three children, two sons and a daughter, to pick up the pieces. One son is ruthless, the second is much more mild-mannered and the daughter, of course, is not expected to lead at all.

It is a well-told tale. However, the part I was not expecting was the gender fluidity and and other LGBT aspects to the story. These are not the typical kind of book that I would read, but the author handles the characters with class and without it being an in-your-face approach. The characters all seem natural, which made the book easy to read.
