Queer Fantasy = YES!

I was not initally going to read this sneak peek. The reasons are twofold, morally and personally. It sounded like just another white fantasy and the gender disguise trope can be problematic. Any turning people to things like *proof* sounds outlandish and I don't like white mob gangsters.

But then I read about the author, Amy Rose Capetta. Turned my unease to yes please! I am always here for ownvoices queer books and had to try it out.

So I dove in. I like Teo and her soft nerdy brother Luca. I like Teo taking care of men who deserve it though I don't agree about the current cheating philanderer. The magic did feel silly and out there at first. Then the mysterious traveler came...

The magic is still a little weird to me. It's almost sentient in the excerpt. Only now I'm rather curious about how it works.

Given my initial refusal, I'm surprised how the world and Teo won me over. I'll be checking it out when it's released for sure.

There is torture and murder involved here in the sneak peek. And old timey sexism. There weren't any POC in the excerpt so IDK about racism and colorism. And there is a quick girl/girl kiss in the past mentioned.

The cover is rather blah. I'd like her father's dagger better or maybe a pile of her former people objects. Maybe her wearing her former people gloves and her mother's necklace while holding her father's dagger....
