Cussy Carter is blue, literally. Her skin is blue and--wait, this is historical fiction? Oh. This was a real thing. Neat.

While the blue-skinned people of Kentucky are fascinating in their own right, "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek" is more about the importance of books and the ways in which they, and the knowledge they impart, bring people together. During a time (the 1930s) where it was difficult to procure books, Cussy is one of the Book Women; she delivers books to the people of Troublesome Creek, an isolated, impoverished area that would be unable to get them otherwise.

For the most part I was really swept along with this story; my heart went out to Cussy, who was so devoted to other people despite the way she was shunned by many. However, the ending wrapped up too quickly and wasn't all that satisfying.
