I rarely read historical fiction. I picked up this novel thinking it was about the Packhorse Library Project. It was! But it was so much more. The story is told in the first person by Cussy Mary Carter, a traveling "book woman" in Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project. She delivers books to the people who reside in the hills and who otherwise would not have access to reading material. Cussy is also "a blue," the last in her family line with a rare genetic blood disorder that turns her skin a pale shade of blue. The author also delves into the history of the "blue people" of Kentucky along with telling the story of the Pack Horse Library Project. Many have compared this book to Jojo Moyes novel of a similar topic, but they are completely different! Part of the book I listened to on audio which I highly recommend as it really gives a 'voice' to the main character Cussy. The audio works well for this book since the story is told from the first person POV. This books combines some medical history along with some history of the Depression. Overall a very enjoyable read!
