Well, I did not know there were 'coloreds' in the Kentucky Hills back in the 1930s. No, not people with black skin, but blue! The same narrow-minded people with the same prejudices existed there though, similar to present day. I was so happy the author portrayed the 'book woman' of Troublesome Creek as a strong, determined to be self-made, upstanding citizen regardless of the burdens, troubles and negativity from her community surrounding her. I am glad President Roosevelt started programs to help these folks in the coal mining country back in the 1930s after the great depression as well, it sure changed Cussy's life and so many others at the time. We need to embrace people with differences, help them, and in doing so, we grow and actually help ourselves.
