This is one of those books that, while fictional, opens your eyes to things you never knew. Literally NEVER knew. And, it makes you want to do more research than you realized.

This book is often compared to JoJo Moyes' "The Giver of Stars". Both are set in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky and are inspired by the Pack Horse Librarians. Some have said this is far better than Moyes' book, others state that one is better.

This does have one interesting detail - the "blue" people of Kentucky, a group I'd NEVER heard about. In fact, there was a 2012 ABC news article about a young man who was so blue when he was born in 1975, that he was compared to the Fugate family of Troublesome Creek. Turns out, he was a descendant. There was a report, dated in 1982 that detailed the incident.

Combining two historic incidents, that makes this book a must read - that is until you get into the more intricate parts of the book. The characters can be hard to identify with and there is mention of rape and abuse as well as medical ethics violations.

I had heard such good things about this book, but I am glad I didn't spend too much time on this one.
