This is a pretty good book, recommended for all public libraries. A lot of readers will really like it, and it's appropriate for readers of Southern fiction, historical fiction, women's fiction, and books about social issues.

For me, this book had a few problems.
First, it wasn't sure what's it's secondary problem/focus was. The main theme was the character's life, work, and social issues, but there were other problems that were introduced throughout the novel (marriage, suspense, more social issues). None of these were bad, but they were all kind of dropped without great resolution, before something else was dropped in.
Second, the character/narrator would talk about something that happened before this moment (the day she was narrating at that moment), or something that would go on to happen in the future, but when exactly these things happened, and how they compared in time to other events, so they felt kind of unmoored.
