The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is the fictional account of the Kentucky Pack Horse librarians as established by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Acts, while also shining a light on the blue-skinned people of Kentucky. It is believed that the blues had a hereditary condition called Methemoglobinemia which means the blood isn’t oxygenated. Cussy Mary is one of the librarians who develops a relationship with some of her patrons while others were rude and disrespectful because of her color.

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek was heartbreaking yet also heartwarming.

“Well, them cloths are a lot like folks. Ain’t much difference at all. Some of us is more spiffed up than others, some stiffer, and still, some softer. There’s the colorful and dull, ugly and pretty, old, new “uns. But in the end we’s all fabric, cut from His cloth.”

I admit it took a bit for me to get into this book, but I’m so glad I stuck with it because I really enjoyed the story in the end. I learned about a part of history that I wasn’t aware of before and who doesn’t like reading about books and the good they do for people.
