I first picked this one up because I enjoyed The Giver of Stars and I was not disappointed! This story is of a young girl who joins the Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and faces adversity not only for the Project but also her blue-tinted skin.
I am a big fan of the historical fiction genre and was thrilled to learn of a piece of US history I wasn't aware of...not the Pack Horse Library, but blue-skinned people of Kentucky!
Another plot in the story is Bluet's Dad trying very hard to get her married off so (theoretically) her life will be easier for her. Here I also learned about marriage candles.
Unfortunately, many are distrustful of Blues and she encounters racism alongside her African American friend from the Pack Horse Library. If you enjoy reading historical fiction, especially the Depression era, I highly recommend The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek!
