What a fascinating beautiful story. This is a part of history I knew very little of and it was told very well.
The story of Cussy Carter, the last of her Blue Family, joins the packhorse library and finds her love in books. This story follows the character through difficulties she deals with due to her skin color.
The strength that Cussy shows in her life and overcoming physical obsticles every day on her library trail, as well as the emotional/social obsticles she deals with by the treatment by townfolk, is just overwhelming.
The part of this story that hit me the most was her acceptance of herself. In finding medication she can take daily to make her skin blue, she tries it and desperately wants it to feel like she belongs. After the side effects become too much, she has to make a decision. Accept herself or give up her library trail that she physically cannot handle while on the medication.
So glad I picked this book up!
