The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is about Cussy, aka Bluet or Book Woman, who is a pack horse librarian in Kentucky. She is also one of the last “Blue people” of Kentucky. The book follows her story, starting with an awful arranged marriage that her pa insisted on in the hopes that she would have someone to look after her whenever he passed. We follow her on her book routes and get to know her patrons and mule Junia. We also get to see what her life is like as a Blue.

This one is well-written and well researched. I had never heard of the Blue people of Kentucky, so I ended up googling them to get more background early in the book. Cussy’s
plight as a Blue was a sad one, and highlights the sad reality of the time period for “coloreds.”

I had heard of the Pack Horse librarians, having read the Giver of Stars last month. The only major similarities between the two is the fact that the main characters are pack horse librarians, and they live in a mining town in Kentucky. It is odd that they were published so closely together, but I don’t think there was any plagiarism involved.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 if you’ve read the Giver of Stars and are interested in more about the pack horse librarians, or you like historical fiction, definitely give this one a read. It does have a semi-slow start/pacing, but give it a solid chance if you find that to be the case. If you’ve read both this one and the Giver of Stars, what are your thoughts? Would you recommend one, both, or neither?
