This was such an interesting story. I loved reading more about the Pack Horse Librarian Project established by President Roosevelt's Administration. And Cussy Mary is such a marvelous character. It's so sad to see the prejudices that she lived with everyday, being a woman, and having blue skin. I had no idea this was an actual thing, that there were in fact Blue People of Kentucky, that had an issue in their blood that caused it to look as if their skin were blue.
Cussy's story as she is persecuted while still trying so desperately to get books out to the people who need and love them is nothing short of heroic. Reading about the trauma her body goes through, trying to make her skin normal hurt my heart. And finally thinking she is going to get a happy ending after all she goes through, then having it ripped away by ignorant people was maddening. This was such an eye-opening book!
