THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK was a gorgeous read. Cussy's voice was so authentically heartbreaking, I teared up multiple times while reading. Even in the happiest parts! This wonderful capturing of voice continued to extend to all the other characters and townspeople in the book.

While I had learned about Kentucky's blue people in high school biology class as a warning tale about inbreeding and incest, under the cold light of a high gloss biology textbook, their humanity was lost. Richardson brought that back with touching clarity.

I am also a recent transplant to Appalachia. Although it is a very different time than Cussy's, TROUBLESOME CREEK gave me a wonderful insight into a part of its history I never would have learned about before, deepening my relationship with a culture I would otherwise not have interacted with as much.
