Set in Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky in 1936, a young women joins the Pack Horse Library Project becoming a librarian who travels to remote parts to deliver books to poor rural inhabitants. It's a bold move to be a lady doing work like that especially in a small town, but Cussy is also the last rare blue-skinned people making her even more of a social outcast. She determinedly carries her books out to the mountain folk despite the rising town troubles with old grudges, dangerous people, and remote wilderness against her.

A wonderful historical fiction novel that draws attentions to lesser spoken moments in history such as the Pack Horse Library and blue-skinned people. The novel centers around books and women holding their own. With charming, funny, and strong characters as well as an exciting plot it's easy to be swept up in this exciting story. A wonderful and touching read that moves you deeply.
