"Dreams were for books."

"Now I know you're a Blue, but these old eyes don't care, nor feels the colors none. It feels the heart, child. And it's a fine one, and you're a fine hillwoman."

"I felt the spark of anger slip behind my eyes, prompting a headache. What I wanted most was to be okay as a Blue. I never understood why other people thought my color, any color, needed fixing."

This novel is a must-read! I learned so much about American history that I have never heard before. The blue people of Kentucky and the Pack Horse Library service are two wonderful stories that should be shared! I am so grateful to Kim Michele Richardson for sharing these two amazing pieces of history. It touched my heart that these women loved books so much that they risked their lives to deliver them to people who were not otherwise able to access books. Not only were they Librarians, but they were teachers and friends. They did so much more than deliver books. They helped educate people who otherwise wouldn't have been educated.

I think all book lovers need to read this book!

I also appreciated the details about mine workers. My Grandpa worked the mines in Colorado, so this piece of history wasn't new to me. It is a brutal and heart wrenching piece of history!

"I curled myself into a tight ball on the blood-soaked Kentucky soil, wailing for Henry and all the Henry's in this dark Hollows who'd never be a common grown up. Stuck forever as Peter Pans."

"You and those books are a shining light for our people. For me."
