The Book Charmer is a captivating blend of magical realism and small-town Southern sensibility. It deals with real life issues of love, loss, grief, and starting over.

The town itself is a character. I loved Dove Pond and all the fascinating characters who live there. I was especially charmed by Sarah, Grace, Mama G., and Trav. Although Sarah the book charmer has a substantial role, Grace takes center stage. I was surprised to find that it is really her book. Grace had so many challenges to face, but always clung to the good. Dove Pond and all its people helped Grace open her heart beyond her own little family.

"It's sad, but life is not fair. I sometimes think it was never supposed to be. Life is made up of moments, good and bad. But while you don't get to pick all the moments, you do get to pick which ones you cling to."

My favorite parts of the book were Trav's interactions with Mama G. Trav had his own challenges to face and he showed such vulnerability. His relationship with Mama G. was incredibly touching. He treated her with such thoughtfulness and care. I loved both of them.

The romance between Trav and Grace was sweet and slow. I would have liked a bit more development in the romantic relationship. I'm hoping that we'll see more later in the series.

I'd recommend The Book Charmer for readers in search of a light read who also enjoy a bit of magic in their fiction.
