Sometimes being a bibliophile creates problems for me when I read a new book because I make so many connections to other books that I fail to be wholly enraptured by the current text. This state of affairs occurred when I started Karen Hawkins new novel The Book Charmer. The premise of a book whisperer is intriguing in this combination of The Great Gilly Hopkins (a difficult girl gets bounced from foster home to foster home) meets Practical Magic (Margarita- drinking magic wielding antithetical sisters) with cultural references to George R. Martin’s Game of Thrones (heartthrob Khal Drogo). As I adored all of those books, I am curious to read the rest of this new novel to see what develops after this well-written excerpt.
