I really like the historical details of Christians and Muslims in their battle for control of Spain. It is the historical accuracy that appeals to me the most; I almost wish that the mapmaker did not have magical skills, but I suppose that it is that slightly different detail which helps to set apart this book from others that are set in the same place and time period. I am glad that the author gave realistic treatment to the palace's covering up of the cartographer's gay sexuality (as well as his visits from male members of the family and staff), as well as the realistic aspect of telling Fatima she must not be alone with him (even though he would be nothing more than a friend to her.) I like Fatima's spunky personality and her ability to detect that her self confidence actually makes some superiors a little afraid of her. These ARC pages were enough to help me decide that I want to know the whole story!
