The Bird King tells the tale of a young woman who is a slave in a royal court of Muslim Spain. Concubine to the Sultan in the time of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella the novel has a base in the history of the time giving the more fantasy elements an anchor. The historical setting also gives the story a richness and depth while the authors writing style interprets the scenes in a modern way.

While I've only read the first chapter as an ARC, the story begins promisingly. As it begins it's not really clear if Hassan, the palace mapmaker who is able to distort reality into scenes and places, is the lone supernatural element to the story. I hope not as the glimpse we get of his power could make for an intriguing world.
