4.5 out of 5 wine glasses. This was so super cute; a perfect bit of nostalgia for more innocent and naive times with a dose of relief that high school is over and I never have to go back and navigate that land mine riddled territory. When YA contemporary is done right (and it def was here), it makes me feel like I’m smack dab in the middle of the road of my life, looking through a telescope towards my past AND towards my daughters’ present and future. I could totally relate to Keely’s obliviousness to how other people saw her because she was blinded by how she saw them. I loved how female friendships are portrayed, the fraught dynamics between boys and girls during that time period, as well as the impact of means girls and toxic masculinity. Plus it was hella fun to read. It dragged a bit in the middle, but other than that, Best Laid Plans is pitch perfect and I’ll be on the lookout for Cameron Lund’s next book.
