Like with many other books, I have wanted to read this book for a while. I originally thought it was a stand-alone book, but after that ending (aargh, that cliffhanger!) I looked it up and there is a book 2 coming out this March. Phew!

I really liked this book! I loved all of the French (for example: the word ‘singe’, the name of Sophia’s monkey, means ‘monkey’ in French). Also, the idea of a almost-dystopian world where the royalty weren’t the all-powerful, magical characters was great. I liked that all the Belles were named after flowers; it added a nice touch to the idea of beautiful girls with the ability to beautify.

The world building was great. We got a nice idea of what New Orleans was like, but I wish Dhonielle Clayton explored more what was outside of it. Was there just nothingness? Were there other cities? I don't know. New Orleans, however, was very well described, especially the rooms in the palace. Every description gave me a vivid image of a colorful world with unnaturally colorful people.

I enjoyed this book, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
