meh?

i'm seriously so sad to be giving this 2 stars. but it just wasn't for me. the writing is absolutely beautiful, the plot however, meh? I'm also big on character driven stories, and for me there were no characters i wanted to root for. Well okay, maybe the teacup elephant. I think there are a lot of people who will adore this book, and I especially hope that for black teens. Sadly, it just wasn't for me.

Also, i'm pretty over the "bury your gays" trope. IJS.

I think if you're a huge fan of fantasy, and/or dystopian novels, you'll probably really enjoy this book. I'm more of a contemporary girl myself, so maybe that's why i didn't mesh with the story. Also sooo much world-building. I don't like info dumping, I'd rather gather information on the world as i move through the story.
