It was good until it wasn’t...
I actually really enjoyed this book for about 3/4 of the way through. I loved the characters and felt Camille was very relatable, if a bit naive. The world building was GORGEOUS, despite the over abundance of food imagery, and I really felt like I could delve into Orleans.
The only problem was the shift in tone. While there were several parts in the beginning that seemed to hint at a darker undertone, and you had to know this book would get dark based on its premise, the shift just.... slapped me in the face. I went from really enjoying the fairly light, yet sometimes dark book to being completely caught off guard as to HOW dark this book was going and how fast.
I wish I could say I loved this book. But a book is nothing if not the whole of its pieces, and I can’t just say I loved it based on how I felt reading most of the book. The ending fourth of the book was just too rushed and dark for me.
