Don’t let the pink cover fool you! Yes, on the surface, this book is about fantastical cosmetology. Camellia is a Belle, which means she has magical powers that control beauty. In a cursed land where people are naturally born with ashen skin and red eyes, that power is a hot commodity. But, just as the message of the novel suggests, beauty is only skin deep. This book has a riveting dark underbelly. Elements of the macabre and not-so-subtle nods to the Gothic classic Jane Eyre make this book a total page-turner. A shocker ending made me want the next book immediately. Pick this one up, and keep your eye out for The Everlasting Rose, the sequel, coming out in February. (Also, the cover just dropped today, 9/7!)
