This is a noir detective story with a twist - it takes place in the underground world of gay bars in 1952. Our hero is a disgraced former cop who isn't trusted by the gay or the straight world. I think this novel does an excellent job of conveying the feeling of always being in danger and always needing to hide while also serving up a compelling mystery.
