This book was wonderful. I was immediately immersed in 1800s New Orleans, the atmospheric writing, the incorporation of French dialogue, the likable characters made this book stand out. The novel follows Celine Rousseau, a seventeen year old from Paris who is running away from an incriminating secret. She goes to live in New Orleans where she meets friend and foe alike, and begins to learn that somethings, someones, are not as they seem.
The subtle themes of struggling with self identity and acceptance, and not suppressing who you are because of society was well woven throughout the novel.
The third person POVs provide insight into each character, and the first person POV creates an air of mystery and suspense. This book was riddled with well revealed plot twists that I did not see coming but made total sense upon explanation. While the romance seemed to be a little too instant love for me, I still enjoyed it.
Overall the writing is stunning! I cannot express how well written this book is. I would definitely recommend.
