The late 1800s is the setting for this calamitous meeting between a young woman running from her past and the man she should never have met. Reminiscent of the early writings of Anne Rice, the presence of the undead shapes the story line from a mystery to be solved into a chess match to avoid death. The lush setting, the details of the costumes are all eloquently written in this latest novel by Renee Ahdieh. The author weaves quotes from Shakespeare into many of the chapters, putting to good use the Bard's words. She captures the overwhelming heat of the city and the tenuous position of women to marry well to secure a position of financial security and social mobility.

In the novel, not knowing the alliances and pacts leaves our heroine, Celine at a disadvantage when trying to decide who to trust in the world of the demi-monde. She finds herself a part of an age-old feud after a series of events force her to seek protection with the very man she should avoid. Unfortunately, that old devil love has different plans. Definitely a must read if you like Southern Gothic, fantasy, Anne Rice, period novels and murder mysteries.
