“The Beautiful” by Renée Ahdieh is a YA book about Celine. Celine Rousseau, a seventeen-year-old girl, runs to New Orleans to get away from her life in Paris. Now living with the sisters of the Ursuline Covent, she is in raptures by the night life of her new city. That awe she is absorbed in leads her to Sébastien Saint Germain. Sébastien, a mysterious man who runs the underground group that Celine falls into. When murders start happening around her Celine must decide who she can trust.
I absolutely loved this book. The aesthetic of luxury and darkness was so good. Celine and her relationship with the “good guy” could have had more time for me to be conflicted by her choice between the love interests but I think the next book will probably go into that relationship more. I loved the characters and how they reacted to each other, and I love the imagery of excess luxury foiled with dark and dirty murders. I will definitely be reading the next book. 5 out of 5 stars.
