The premise of the book sounded fantastic but it never really delivered for me. I'm clinging onto hope that the sequel will knock it out of the park because I really only liked the last few chapters and was either bored or confused for the remainder of the book.

There was very limited world-building and I couldn't really make sense of all the different characters. I didn't really enjoy the interaction between Celine and Sebastian and I was confused by the relationship between Sebastian and his uncle. The side characters also didn't really have any depth.

The other languages didn't add anything to the story and they were used more than I cared for and the setting didn't come through as much as I would've liked. We were told and not shown that it was late 1800s New Orleans.
