Don't let the 3 stars mislead you, I definitely enjoyed this book! Set in the late 19th century in New Orleans, Louisiana and following Celine, a young woman recently emigrated from France after an unpleasant past she would prefer to leave behind. The setting was one of my favorite parts of the book. I felt that the author did a great job building the atmosphere and really imbued the story with the sticky, muggy, dark New Orleans environment. Likewise was pleasantly surprised with the characters and their complexity given this is a somewhat typical YA romance story. I really enjoyed Celine and felt the romantic interests were also enjoyable. If this sounds up your street I would definitely suggest you give it a go. Just be sure to go in expecting what it is: a fun, broody YA romance with many of the normal tropes, and not what it isn't: a new, unique storyline that will subvert your expectations. Great first book in the series, looking forward to future installments now that the set-up in book one is complete!
