The Beautiful captured the dark and mysterious aesthetic of historical New Orleans with vampires perfectly! I loved the starkness of the nunnery versus Celine's wildness, her daring, and the shadows around her past.

My one complaint is that the actual storyline didn't feel totally believable to me. The character reactions or non-reactions seemed flat and I didn't love any of the characters-- not even the nephew of St. Germaine. The group dynamics annoyed me rather than amused me (I don't know why but this keeps happening in YA, maybe I'm getting too old to read about teens ten years my younger) and I felt like not quite enough was revealed about anything. LIke, I was in the dark a little too often, it was frustrating.

I would read the next book, but probably would not reread The Beautiful.
