Set in 19th century New Orleans, seventeen year old Celine Rousseau has travelled from Paris to NOLA to flee her old life as a dressmaker. She has been taken in along with six other girls by the sisters of the Ursuline convent. But while Celine is captivated by NOLA and wants to explore the vibrant city, the sisters believe the city is too full of sin for the young girls. And when a body of a young girl is discovered it seems they may be right, but will that defer Celine?

Renée Ahdieh is really onto something good here. You are sucked straight in with by immensely readable and intriguing writing. Our heroin is very mysterious. She's running from something but you don't know what. And we've only been briefly introduced to an unnamed male character whom is equally enigmatic. Ahdieh pulls you in and clearly has no intent on letting you go. I'm fully immersed in 1870's New Orleans with a feel of deep magic and mystery and I'm very excited to see where this book goes.
