First of all, thanks to BookishFirst for the ARC of this book! I am a HUGE fan of Renee Ahdieh, as in, I've read everything she's written and seen her on every tour possible. As such, I was so excited to see that she had a new book coming out, and one about vampires, no less! I know that a lot of people are thinking that YA + vampires = Twilight, but this is about as far from Twilight as you can get. This is more like if Anne Rice wrote YA. It is everything that a vampire book should be: dark, atmospheric, thrilling, seductive. That is the real down side of receiving an ARC; you get to read the book ahead of time but that means you have to wait even longer for the next one! I'm not going to write a whole, long plot synopsis because those can be found everywhere. Suffice it to say that this book is captivating and I simply CANNOT wait to find out what happens to Celine, Pippa, Bastien, and the whole crew! I have read a number of other reviews about this book and I want to briefly address some of the critiques I've read. First of all, I've read a number of times that this book is "too YA." That's right. Because it IS YA. YA is geared toward teens. It will not be the same level of romantic relationships, etc. that there are in adult novels. Teens think differently than adults. That's just how it works. Teens should not be written out of their own genre. If you want adult vampires, go read Anne Rice. Second, I've read that the historical setting doesn't add to the plot and I couldn't disagree more. There are so many things that are possible/not possible because of the time period it is set in. To begin with, Celine would never have simply been able to disappear from Paris and travel to New Orleans unnoticed in modern times. I'll leave it at that and finish with, if you love YA and vampires, READ THIS!
