I borrowed this ARC from a local bookstore for their Teen Advisory Group. All opinions are my own.
This started off fairly well. It seemed like a different story and I was very excited for the 1870s New Orleans during Carnival setting. Within the first 100 pages or so there were murders happening (don't worry NOT a spoiler) so I was ready for the major murder mentioned in the synopsis. It happened around 200 pages in. It was starting to drag a little bit at this point and some things were a little confusing but I thought it would get better since the girl was murdered (that sounds really bad but I was waiting for the climax). Once the murder happened, little investigation was being done, specifically by the main character who's point of view we follow. Basically at this point, the main character was just waiting for the police officer to find any evidence of who the killer was.
This entire time, our main character was dealing with some romantic feelings. She repeatedly called her love interest "devilishly handsome" in various ways. It was getting fairly repetitive. I can't remember what phrase it was, but this phrase must have been said at least five times in three pages.
Overall, I was not enjoying the writing style. I think I was going into this book thinking it revolved around the mystery when from what I read, it was not. I would recommend this book to someone who wants a more historical and fantastical book with a mystery, not a person who is looking for a mystery thriller.
