Intriguing, but slightly disappointing

I found the writing a little stiff. The dialogue didn’t always feel natural, but it was ok. Jamie was interesting and I liked the concern/guilt for swapping her babysitting shift with her sister. I wish more of it had taken place in the past since that was the most interesting section of the story. There was a little too much drama with the high school kids and I admit there were times I had them all confused between past and present. While I get the impression we were supposed to like Cooper, his obsession with Emma and how much his wife resembled her seemed a bit too strange. I also kind of wish Emma had just been murdered in the attack. The way she was left not really able to grow up or care for herself made the plot feel too muddled with all the side pieces between the mother, her weird thing with the eyes, and then the homeless guy.

The mystery was pretty easy to solve. I did think one aspect came out of left field, but otherwise it was obvious to me. I think I wanted a more traditional slasher or babysitter stalker story, but I would consider reading another Nancy Bush in case this one just wasn't for me.
