The Art of Escaping by Erin Callahan has a promising start but it didn't wow me from the first 20 pages. The story is about a girl named Mattie who wants to be an escapologist, so she befriends the daughter of a famous one, Miyu. Mattie's best friend, Stella, leaves for the summer, and Mattie is left all alone. The characters sound like typical characters in a ya novel. The plot, although pretty original, has cliche elements to it. The writing style is good. This book does sound interesting, but I don't think the characters are that relatable (at least to me), but others might find them relatable. Overall, The Art of Escaping sounds like it has potential, and I am interested in reading more.
