I think people of any age could enjoy this book, whether you are seventeen-years-old like the main character Mattie or there is still a bit of teenager in your heart. Although Mattie is particularly interested in Houdini and disappearing acts, the title seems to capture that feeling of wanting to disappear that anyone can experience, but especially teenagers who are still working to figure out who and what it is they are or want to be and what they want their lives to be like. The characters are likable, generally believable, and yet also original. Readers might think that Will is going to be the stereotypical cool high school guy, but he is not. He is willing to be friends with Mattie and to let her bounce off of him some of her ideas and concerns.
There is also another female friend, Miyu. Although her family connection (Miyu's dad is an escape artist) is what Mattie drew Mattie's attention, there seems to be a willingness to be nice and help someone. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. There's not an emphasis on sex or romance or peer pressure in this book, and I enjoyed that change; there are references to LGBTQ feelings and issues. However, nothing in this book is heavy-handed, and the reader gets to see Mattie become more self confident as she pursues something of a genuine interest.
