Fell flat

I get excited when authors are from the same state as me. Like we already have a connection and that's a good basis for starting a book! But I felt no connection to this book. I thought it was a really cool concept but the book fell pretty flat for me. Not sure why Mattie was so ashamed of her hobby. Will was annoying talking in 1920's slang. I totally thought Akiko Miyake was a real person, a real magician, a real escapologist. She's not. I guess it's a lot easier to make up someone famous than to have to do a ton of research on a real person like Harry Houdini or Dorothy Dietrich. Callahan already did research on escapology so she put her own person in it. Which is fine. But I wanted Miyake to be real! The portrayal of her daughter, Miyu, was really weird. There are only a few times where you're reminded that she's only in her 30's. But from everything else you keep thinking she's like some ancient crone. The writing was not very good and hopefully Callahan can improve it with her next book(s).
