Set during World War II, this is part mystery, part ghost story and full on literary novel, with a touch of romance thrown in. Women are still bared from many professions. It is only because many of the available men are enlisting to go fight that Hetty even gets the job of being the curator of the mammal collection while it is stored outside of London. Her job is the keep the collection safe at Lockwood Manor. During the Second World War, many collections, as well as many children, were spread out in the countryside wherever they could find shelter. Some fared better than others.
Lockwood Manor was home to Major Lockwood and his daughter Lucy. They were all that was left of the noble family that had settled at the Manor. As with many old houses, even ones continually lived in, there were secrets and reported ghosts and maybe even curses. The war caused a rapid turnover of staff, so strange happenings should have been expected.
The Major has his own plans for the mammal collection. Lucy also has plans and designs, only they are centered on Hetty. Hetty just wants to keep the collection safe, so she can return it to the museum at the war's end and perhaps keep working there. All plans come to a combustion point.
I enjoyed the literary ghosts and the unconventional romance and even the non-mysterious mystery. I think you will too.
