This was a slow burn of a gothic, atmospheric tale, and gave me strong Rebecca (Daphne DuMaurier) vibes. Beginning in 1939 it begins as Hetty arrives at Lockwood Manor with her museum’s natural history collection, which had been relocated to the countryside to keep it safe from the War. Soon things go missing, ghostly presences are seen in the halls, strange noises punctuate the night, and Hetty starts to doubt her sanity. Is the Manor haunted...or is there a very real monster there?
Jane Healey’s writing was beautiful & haunting, vividly describing the slowly decaying, crumbling old manor as a perfect backdrop for a creepy, spooky mystery. The buildup was slow, but the ending was spectacular & satisfying.
