It is the beginning of World War II and Hetty Cartwright is charged with evacuating London with a menagerie of stuffed animals that belong to the natural history museum. They arrive at Lockwood Manor where she meets the sickly Lucy and her stiff, overbearing father, Major Lockwood. Mysteriously the stuffed animals keep moving around the manor by themselves and there is an evil monster that is creeping through the halls at night.
This is a wonderful creepy story that kept me engrossed til the end. I loved the Gothic setting and enjoyed the mystery and secrets of the characters and the manor itself. The search for the monster kept me guessing til the end. The monster was not what I was expecting and I think that fact made it all the more horrifying.
