The Animals of Lockwood Manor is a Gothic tale, an historical novel and a love story that drew me in from the opening pages. Set during WWII, a London museum’s animal specimens are being moved to Lockwood Manor to protect them from the bombings. Hetty Cartwright is sent with them as the curator of the collection. This is her first major assignment for the museum and a chance to prove herself. At the Manor she meets Major Lockwood who shows his displeasure that the museum sent a woman. She also meets his daughter Lucy, who is suffering from the recent loss of her mother and grandmother. Assisting Hetty with the exhibit not only keeps her busy, but also allows their friendship to grow.

Shortly after her arrival, one of the specimens disappears. This is just the first incident but more follow in short order until Hetty begins to question her own sanity. Culminating in a tragic event, this was an excellent story. I would like to thank Bookish First for providing this book for my review.
