"The mammals were being evacuated..." The Animals at Lockwood Manor opens with a reverse reenactment of Noah's Ark as taxidermied animal specimens from the British Natural History Museum are dispersed to the far corners of the continent. Hetty Cartwright, a down-on-her-luck museum employee, has a stroke of good fortune when she is asked to oversee one such collection at Lockwood Manor. However, upon arrival, Hetty soon realizes that not everything is what it seems at the estate. There's the arrogant Lord Lockwood and his fragile daughter Lucy, who is haunted by the recent mysterious deaths of her mother and grandmother. Animals go missing in the middle of the night. And it seems like someone has ulterior motives for hosting the museum at Lockwood Manor. Overall, The Animals at Lockwood Manor was a highly enjoyable read, great for fans of Jane Eyre, The Essex Serpent, and The Miniaturist.
