Depressing first chapter, interesting summary

This first chapter of the book is very depressing. It's basically about all of Hetty's failures in life thus far, including a loveless childhood and a mistake at work that pretty much costs her all respect in her career field. If I had just read the excerpt and known nothing else about the book, I don't think I would have continued it. But looking at the summary and some of the review on Goodreads has me curious enough to be interested in the rest of the story. I can only hope that the rest of the book is more interesting than the first chapter. The cover is also very nice and adds to the appeal of the book.
